Center for Public Philosophy

The Center for Public Philosophy, headed by Prof. Masaya Kobayashi, was established in 2003 as part of the Chiba University Faculty of Law and Economics. The purpose of the Center is to promote research in the field of Public Philosophy from an interdisciplinary perspective, to increase the social importance and practical workability of science, as well as to create a venue for meaningful public debate from the viewpoint of Public Philosophy.

Presently, the Center for Public Philosophy is an integrated part of the Public Research Center within the Public Affairs Research Center for Sustainable Welfare Society, which was established through the “21st Century Centers of Excellence Program” for research in the field of Social Sciences and Humanities. In October 2006, a Public Research Center for Welfare Society was established at Chiba University with the aim of advancing global welfare and looking for solutions to problems such as global poverty. Our Center for Public Philosophy works in close collaboration with this center as well.

In addition to holding international symposia and research meetings, the Center for Public Philosophy maintains a website and a mailing list which constitute a network that aims to bring together scientists and members of the general public as well as to provide intellectual space for shared activities.
